CS Heavy Forgings manufactures custom components in customer-specified carbon, engineering alloy, tool and stainless steels. This material guide connects buyers with the appropriate grade family for forged steel shafts, forged cranks and crankshafts, forged rolls, die blocks and other heavy engineering forgings.
Final material selection must follow the buyer drawing, applicable standard, service conditions, heat-treatment requirement and inspection plan. Equivalent grade names should be confirmed against the governing specification before production.
Steel grade families and applications
| Steel family | Target grades | Typical custom-forging enquiries |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon and engineering steels | EN8 and EN9, EN42, mild steel | General machinery shafts, rods and engineered components |
| Engineering alloy steels | EN19, EN24 | Heavy-duty shafts, cranks and highly loaded machinery parts |
| Bearing and wear-resistant steel | EN31 | Wear-resistant rolls and selected engineered components |
| Hot-work tool steels | H12 and H13, DB6 | Forging dies, die blocks, tooling and hot-work components |
| Stainless steels | 304L, 316L | Corrosion-resistant shafts, rolls and process components |
Match the material to the forged product
Forged shafts and rods
EN8 and EN9 can suit general engineering enquiries, while EN19 and EN24 are commonly requested for higher-load shaft applications. Where corrosion resistance is central to the specification, buyers may request 304L or 316L stainless steel. Review the complete forged shaft manufacturing capability.
Forged cranks and crankshafts
Crank and crankshaft enquiries should be evaluated around fatigue loading, section size, heat treatment, machining allowance and inspection. EN19 and EN24 are priority commercial grades for this product family. See the forged cranks manufacturer page.
Forged rolls and stepped rolls
Roll material depends on wear, contact stress, working temperature and the required surface and core properties. EN31, selected tool steels and customer-specified alloy grades may be considered only after technical review. Explore forged rolls, industrial metal rolls and forged stepped rolls.
Die blocks and hot-work tooling
H12, H13 and DB6 belong in the tool-steel conversation rather than being grouped with ordinary shaft steel. Enquiries should specify required condition, hardness range, machining allowance and ultrasonic-testing acceptance criteria.
Information required for a reliable quotation
- Component drawing and finished dimensions
- Material grade with the complete ASTM, BS, EN, DIN, IS or customer standard
- Required supply condition and heat treatment
- Machining allowance, tolerances and surface requirements
- Ultrasonic, hardness, chemical, mechanical or PMI testing requirements
- Quantity, unit weight, delivery location and inspection plan
Terms such as “Class 3” or “Class 4” are not complete material specifications without the associated standard. Buyers should provide the full specification before the grade is quoted or presented as an equivalent.

Frequently asked questions
Which steel grades are available for custom forgings?
Customer-specified carbon, alloy, tool and stainless steel grades can be reviewed, including EN8, EN9, EN19, EN24, EN31, EN42, H12, H13, DB6, 304L and 316L. Availability remains subject to the complete specification, section size and order requirements.
How should a buyer select a steel grade?
Selection should be based on the applicable material standard, component loading, operating temperature, corrosion exposure, heat treatment and testing requirements stated on the buyer drawing or purchase specification.
